I’ve been researching intelligence for a long time — in the process, I found 12 signs that prove that someone is highly intelligent.
Some of them are pretty intuitive, while others are more obscure. If you do most or all of these things, then congratulations! You’re brilliant too :) Spoiler alert #7 will apply to most writers here on @Medium.
There are significant reasons to size up a person’s mental acuity. For example, if you are taking advice, interviewing, or communicating, it helps to know what you are working with. Many of the best managers are excellent at reading their audience. Being able to size up the intelligence of others is also vital for one’s own self-awareness. If you find yourself in an underperforming group, it would be helpful to understand why that is so you could seek better opportunities elsewhere.

Intelligent people tend to be realistic when looking at the world around them. They are much less likely than others to allow their emotions or wishful thinking to dictate their conclusions about themselves or others. Intelligent people are more invested in the truth than in maintaining social harmony or avoiding uncomfortable thoughts. Indeed, one criticism of intelligent people by their lessers is that they are too focused on here and now and don’t behave properly. They fail to conform to the rules of society.
When you think about it, this is perhaps the most important sign of intelligence. If you are unaware of the nature and extent of reality, then it is useless to try to cope with that reality. Reality has many different facets. The intelligent person appreciates these aspects in their complexity.
