Following a stormy pattern with frequent periods of heavy precipitation and severe weather outbreaks, major drought improvement occurred this spring across the Great Plains and Mississippi Valley. Recent heavy precipitation from May 28 to June 3 resulted in additional improvements to parts of the central and southern Great Plains. A dry start to the thunderstorm season and above-normal temperatures continued to result in drought expansion and intensification across the southern half of the Florida Peninsula. Anomalously heavy precipitation for late May into the beginning of June led to drought improvement across parts of Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana. Alaska and Puerto Rico remain drought-free, while drought of varying intensity persists for parts of Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii.

Building on what the citizens of Fort Collins, Colorado started, the BCMSHRW is utilizing the same rain gauges to gain better resolution of precipitation patterns in the watersheds and how it affects the functionality of the streams. Using the high capacity, all-weather rain gauges, many local stakeholders including residents, farmers, and businesses are helping to track precipitation amounts and post rainfall amounts online for anyone in the watershed to view. Participants update daily precipitation to the CoCoRHS (Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow) network where precipitation density maps and tables are generated for easy viewing. This event broke the tornado drought for the NWS Wichita office of 611 days. Storms developed during the late afternoon hours on Wednesday, May 26th over Central Kansas near a warm front. A very moist and unstable air mass was in place which allowed storms to rapidly become severe, producing hail up to baseball size along with a few brief tornadoes. The strongest tornado caused some damage across far northern Rice county. These same storms also produced very heavy rainfall which led to some flooding.
