How to Reset a GE Dishwasher Explained (2024)

Whether your GE dishwasher is experiencing power issues or is stuck on a washing cycle – resetting it can be an easy way to fix any issues you're experiencing. Although your model may have different features or settings, resetting a GE dishwasher can be done by a reset button, powering it on and off, or by putting it into service mode.

  • Press Reset Button: Many models of GE dishwashers come with a built-in reset feature, to easily reset it if not functioning properly.
  • Disconnect Power to Dishwasher: Often a power reset like disconnecting and reconnecting the power from your breaker for 5 minutes can help to fix any issues you're having with your appliance.
  • Kick Plate Reset Button or Switch: Some GE dishwasher models feature a reset switch or button behind the kick plate at the bottom of the appliance, which can be used to reset the system.
  • Service Mode: With certain GE dishwasher models, there are features to enter a 'Service Mode' for a technician to diagnose a problematic part; this mode can also be used to reset the dishwasher.

Why Do I Need to Reset My GE Dishwasher?

If you're experiencing issues with the power in your home, or if your dishwasher has a history of issues – part or software – resetting can often be the only option you have to restore functionality. Your dishwasher may also be stuck on a washing cycle and the only way to stop it is by disconnecting and reconnecting its power or pushing that reset button on the touchpad.

How Do You Reset a GE Dishwasher?

Some of these methods are not only easier but more accessible to most GE dishwasher models, so make sure to check your user manual for every available option:

GE Dishwasher Reset Button

Most modern GE dishwasher models will come with a built-in reset button or feature for you as the user to press whenever necessary. However, this feature can sometimes only be as useful if you have the user manual for your dishwasher, so ensure you have that handy.

Disconnect and Reconnect Power to GE Dishwasher

Depending on your setup at home, turning off power to your dishwasher and restoring it soon after by way of the circuit breaker can prove to be the most efficient way to reset it; although you may prefer unplugging and replugging it. Either way, disconnecting its power source can sometimes reset the circuit board and system as a whole and fix any issues you were previously having.

GE Dishwasher Kick Plate Reset Switch or Button

This varies from model to model, once again, but your model may have a reset switch for the motor and/or system as a whole underneath and behind a kick plate at the bottom of the dishwasher. This kick plate can be easily removed by unthreading a number of screws with a wrench or screwdriver, locating the switch or button, and activating it. Just make sure the power is connected when you reset it with this method!

Enabling Service Mode on Your GE Dishwasher

Service mode, also known as diagnostic or test mode, can prove to be a useful feature with a variety of GE dishwasher models. Service mode can either be used to diagnose the parts within the dishwasher, like the pump, heating element, or detergent dispenser, or it can be used to reset the dishwasher as a whole. If you discover any parts that are broken or not working properly, check out our PartSelect GE dishwasher inventory. Your GE dishwasher may operate differently, but the following guide is a general idea of how to enter service mode and reset it:

  1. Hold 'Start' and 'Select Cycle' for 5 seconds until the touchpad lights up.
  2. Hold 'Select Cycle' for another 5 seconds. The 'Lock Controls' light may or may not light up. At this point, your dishwasher is now in Service Mode if a light is blinking.
  3. If you don't see any blinking lights, hold 'Select Cycle' for another 5 seconds and let go once the blinking begins.
  4. In service mode, you can diagnose each part of the dishwasher that corresponds to the light blinks in your user manual. Press 'Select Cycle' to cycle through each part, and the light should blinking a different number each time.
  5. To begin resetting the dishwasher, hold the 'Start' button for 5 seconds until its button lights up.
  6. Once again hold the 'Select Cycle' and 'Start' button for 5 seconds.
  7. After 5 seconds the touchpad should light up to indicate it's reset, and you can resume using your GE dishwasher as normal.
