Why is my PAYE value different compared to the IRD calculator?
By default, this calculator applies the Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC) for incomes which would qualify. The IRD calculator does not include this. You can disable this under the IETC settings.
This calculator also splits PAYE and ACC into two separate values. The IRD calculator combines these. If you want them combined, there is a setting under the advanced tab or you can apply it in your User Profile.
Why is my weekly/hourly income is being calculated as hourly/weekly instead?
The calculator tries to guess whether your income is hourly or weekly. If it's wrong, you can adjust the threshlolds under the Advanced settings.

Can I change the tax rates to a different year?
If you know the rates, you can adjust all of the individual settings. For more recent years, you can set the year under the Advanced settings.
Can I combine PAYE and ACC as a single value?
You can enable a subtotal view of these values under the advanced settings tab or in your User Profile Settings. When enabled, it will then appear on the results table.
How do I calculate tax on secondary income?
Check the "secondary income" box. In the Secondary settings, put the gross value of all of your other income (including primary income) into the box. Then calculate the secondary portion.
How do I calculate a pro-rated salary?
- Enter the full time salary in the main income box
- Open the "General" options
- Enter the reduced number of hours you will be working in "Hours worked per week"
- Check the "Enable Proration" checkbox
- Enter the "Full-time equivalent hours"
- Press the "Calculate" button
What is the Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC)?
A tax credit for salary or wage earners whos income is within a certain band and who do not collect any other credits from the government.

What is "salary sacrifice" with KiwiSaver?
Some employers may quote you a "package" salary which includes their contribution to your KiwiSaver. This reduces your gross pay to compensate their obligation to contribute to KiwiSaver. So the result is you pay for both portions towards KiwiSaver - your contribution and your employers contribution.
You can enable this on the PAYE Calculator under the KiwiSaver options.
What is "Payroll Giving"?
Payroll Giving is the system used to donate to registered charaties directly through your payroll provider at the time you get paid. The advantage of donating via this method is that you don't need to claim a rebate at the end of the tax year, the tax credits are automatically applied in the pay run.
Why is the month value not equal to double the fortnight?
Not every month has exactly four weeks, so we use different maths.

What is the minimum wage?

How do I find my tax code?

Ensure you enable all of the appropriate settings for your situation, such as: Student Loan and/or Secondary Income if applicable.
Auto-calculation is annoying, how do I stop it?
The PAYE Calculator will auto calculate your saved Main gross salary. You can change the calculation by saving a new Main income.
To stop the auto-calculation you will need to delete your saved PAYE Calculator data from your User Profile settings.
Can I auto-calculate via the URL?
Yes, you can use specially formatted urls to automatically apply variables and auto-calculate.
