Spy to Scout in Unhappy Returns.

The Spy, hailing from an indeterminate region of France, is an enthusiast of sharp suits and even sharper knives.

History[]

The Spy, being a man of mystique and anonymity, has, by all non-existent account, lived the life of a free-lance hitman for most of his entirely unknown history during the first half of the 20th century. Around 1945, the Spy began a passionate fling with a mother of seven from Boston, which resulted in the birth of a child. The boy, later named Jeremy, grew up without knowing his dad, but the Spy was aware of his paternity.

During the summer of 1968, Spy was one of nine mercenaries to be recruited by Reliable Excavation Demolition and Builders League United to continue Redmond and Blutarch's neverending war to seize the land left to them by their deceased father. Among his colleagues was his now 23 year-old son, who was still blissfully unaware of their relationship, instead believing his father to be famous singer Tom Jones, in spite of the latter being only five years older than the Scout. Jeremy did know that the Spy was having an affair with his mom, much to his own horror, but was not aware of just how long they've been together.

Four years later, the death of the Mann brothers prompts the Spy to work on going into hiding and is about to leave in his red sports car for a jet set to take off for an unknown destination abroad. Though in a hurry, the Scout makes repeated pleads to take him over to Teufort, the city near their former battlegrounds, so he could collect his family's life savings from the local bank. Worrying for the Scout's mother, the Spy obliges and gives him 20 minutes to make the withdrawal, even accompanying him into the vault to ensure everything goes smoothly. As he, for once, compliments the Scout for his unusually future minded decision of leaving his assets in a safe account, it's revealed that he had spent it all on 12 square yards of Tom Jones memorabilia, claiming it would massively increase in market price in due time. The Spy is appalled by the Scout's financial irresponsibility, as the collection would only become of value if Tom Jones, who was in perfect health, were to suddenly die. It was then when visiting police spotted the pair and identified them as wanted criminals, locking them inside when they attempted to flee. They were then sentenced to be hanged in an impromptu and most certainly unofficial trial headed by dim-witted Mayor Mike.

After spending five and a half months on death row, Spy faced his ultimate demise with dignity, enjoying a miniature last meal and a bottle of wine he hid in one of his many false teeth (arguing that the regular food they are given is filled with tranquilizers and anti-psychotics) while simultaneously killing Joey Murders, the inmate the pair shared their cell with, with his own shiv in self-defense. Lamenting the unfair judicial proceedings, incompetent lawyers and all-around madness of the world around him, he plans to murder everyone at the court house before a last verdict can be made.

At their final mock-trial, after listening to the Scout's excruciatingly off-topic final statement, the Spy prepared to commit make a break for freedom, arming himself with a miniature butterfly knife, but loses his weapon when the Soldier, dressed in plainclothes, bursts into the court with the Demoman, who had come to stop the inevitable guilty verdict. This attempt is quickly cut short when the Soldier, after hearing the Scout laugh about the former's made-up military background, snaps the defense lawyer's neck in a fit of rage, which in turn prompts the presiding mayor/judge to sentence the new arrivals to death as well. As the mayor lists of the crimes for which they are being executed for, which, for once, were not actually perpetrated by them and utterly ridiculous in nature, Miss Pauling comes to their rescue at the gallows, handing the mayor a mayoring book (more akin to a pamphlet), which states that a city mayor cannot legally decree or carry out capital punishment, hold more than one position as an elected official and, for that matter, had to also be re-elected on a regular basis. As it turns out, the residents of Teufort had all been rendered intellectually deficient, due to the mercs fighting with chemical warfare and releasing toxic material while operating the local lead mill, inadvertently contaminating the local water supply for the last generation, which is why the townsfolk quickly forget about their hype for the execution and gleefully flock to the library in search for more knowledge.

When the TF2 mercs are captured by the TFC mercs, the Spy sympathizes with fellow prisoner Miss Pauling and offers to spit part of his emergency cyanide capsule, hidden in his molar, into her mouth in a suicide pact, a contingency plan interrupted by the Heavy freeing them. When their rescuer reveals himself to be the TFC Spy, the arriving Soldier, in company of Zhanna, kill him and knock Greg (TFC Demoman) to the ground, who is then choked to death by the Spy with his foot shackles.

He and the Sniper later attempt to take out the TFC Sniper, Virgil, in a ploy, with the Spy cloaking himself as Fred, hoping to lure him outside for the Sniper to bludgeon him to death with a 2x4. Virgil sees through their trick, however, and shoots the Spy in the kneecap. Seeing the Sniper shimmying his way across the room's window, the Spy buys himself time by asking for one last smoke, allowing his partner to blow his would-be-murderer's head off with his own rifle.

As the duo go to meet up with the other mercs, the Sniper, who had been clinically dead just hours earlier, asks the Spy for his coat, as he had made his brief death experience had unpleasantly found out that he had soiled himself. As the two argue about whether a 10,000$ suit was "adult diaper" material, they discover the Scout, critically wounded after a tussle with numerous robots, and about to die of blood loss. While the Sniper leaves to get help, the Spy disguises himself as the Scout's dream father, Tom Jones, and tells him that he's proud of his son's achievements and sorry that he couldn't be there for him. The Scout dies in the Spy's arms, unaware that his father had been at his side for the last few years. This confession would turn out to have been meaningless, as the Scout suddenly comes back to life, much to the relief and chagrin of the Spy.
