SJCharSure reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor, though.
LynnI found it hard not to think of her as a real person while i was reading the book. It's a great book
Kamesa CarterI just started listening to this book, and I feel that it has echoes of Elizabeth Taylor, Joan Crawford, and Bette Davis.
Rachel LNo, she's fictional! (But she feels real when reading the book)
Marguerite M.I had the same question but my daughter told me it was a composite of several movie stars. Elizabeth Taylor whom I thought was Evelyn, but also Dunaway, etc.
NiaNo but I'm here because of Taylor Swift so...
SaltwaterdivaActually, it is based on a real life story. Do some research on Janet Gaynor and her friend, Mary Martin, who the elderly among us will remember as Peter Pan.
Christiani think it's a lot of people in hollywood 100%... makes me look at the tabloids in a whole new light!
Julia AlejosNot a stupid question, I also think the same, Evelyn feels so real, she reminds me a bit of Elizabeth taylor and a bit of Marilyn Monroe
Bonnie ThackerI had to google if Daisy Jones was real when I was reading that book. TJR does such a good job with her characters.
KristinI kept wondering the same thing, even after I googled the name to check. She felt so real while I was reading this book. She definitely could've been real.
A CMany similarities to Hedy Lemarr - including "scandalous" movie made abroad (fully realize i'm a couple of of years late to this party...)
KaraI had not thought she was real, but this book popped up under historical fiction category in the Goodreads best book of the year. Loved the book!
Ellano, fictional, however, I feel like she could be real :-)
Hannah SillarsShe's very Rita Hayworth in some ways.
Vania✩I kinda wish that she was.
Rishi AjmeraThat question was on my mind too! I even searched on google many times while reading the book.
Melisa MustacevicI read an article saying that Reid based Evelyn on Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner
KlaraThe author also kind of used this quote by Rita Hayworth: "Every man i knew went to bed with Gilda... and woke up with me", so I guess she was inspired by her (among others)
Liz YapI looked through Little Women trying to see if it was based on anyone famous. I believe it had shades of Liz Taylor's life. Probably a mixture of many personalities of that time.
KristinaYes, I believe the book parallels several Hollywood actresses and actors like Marlene Dietri, Garbo, Taylor etc. It definitely resembles Rudolph Valentio’s involvement with Jean Acker, Grace Darmond, Alla Nazimova and Natasha Rambova.
BetsyNo, but I'm sure it was somebody's story back in the day. Hollywood was all about image and secrets.
Stephanie ElizabethI was wondering the same thing. The way the book was written totally had me fooled for a memoir.
sophie ✨nope! its easy to think that though the writing is just so realistic. i had to ask the same thing when reading daisy jones and the six!
DeeSure does seem like it. Made me think of all the Hollywood stars that might be living the same way. Not in terms of sexuality, but manipulating the narrative by who they marry or are "seen with".
Mary MyersJust like Daisy Jones and the Six. I was convinced it was a biography as I was reading. Nope…just great writing!
Wendy HillI also found it hard not to think of her as a real person. I think she is a mix of a few old Hollywood stars.
Kellee WightmanSame!!! Had to google
I just read The Chaperone- and come to find out it based on true character so was checking this one out, too!
Only15% into it, reads like a true story!
Christine TownsendRock Hudson had to marry someone in order to mask his sexuality as well.
Ida SalenI thought of Jane Fonda! I've read her biography and she is quite like Evelyn.
MartaI once found myself wanting to google how she looked like, haha!
Bookworm123no she isnt search on google
Debbie FrizzellI agree. This definitely reads like someone's life in Hollywood. I love it so far! I've loved all Ms. Jenkin's books!!
SophiaMarilyn Monroe is another one that comes to mind. This series is very good: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14719784...
Sidna She is not a real person, but obviously was based on Elizabeth Taylor who was married eight times to seven different men.
Elena PazmanThis is genius. While reading I was convinced she was real!! The author has done an exceptional job with creating a character everyone can relate too but also is so glamorous that she actually does exist in Hollywood.
Ava Dakashhaha i actually thought that while reading the book but no Evelyn is sadly not a real person even though if she was she would be a HUGE icon now a days!!
Hno, she s not a real person
BoI was going to say I wish she was but then I thought about it and I thought do I. It's weird because I know a lot of celebrities do a couple of things she has but it's sad to think that...
Audrey OrensteinI think Evelyn's start in Hollywood reminds me of Lucille Ball.
Raisa IslamI heard that it was inspired by both Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Munroe
Elizabeth BennetNo hon not directly
aleI'm not a 100% sure but I think it's based on Elizabeth Taylor's story.
Abbiefeels like reading the memoir of Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor, but maybe inspired..........
ReneeNot a stupid question, I had to Google the name myself. :)
Stella PapanikolaouShe's fictional but I will say I really felt like the character was based on Marilyn Monroe! Also not at all a stupid question... the writing was so convincing I found that I had to ask myself that question more than once
Tiffany DanielleI think it's an adaptation of many. I thought of Lucille Ball, Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor to name a few.
KristenNo, she's entirely fictional, although I do think that Taylor Jenkins Reid took inspiration from many golden age actresses, particularly Elizabeth Taylor, Rita Hayworth, and maybe a little Marilyn Monroe.
Meghann AI'm watching "Reframed: Marilyn Monroe" and her start, including how she came into her beauty and body, down to her first marriage as her way to get out is exactly like Evelyn Hugo! I feel like TJR must've watched the same documentary. I'm only 25% into the book, but so far it's the same story.
Carol L. EasleyI got hung up on trying to identify Evelyn as a specific person. When I was able to think of her as fictional, I enjoyed the story a lot more.
KeandraEvelyn Hugo was actually strongly influenced by Elizabeth Taylor. Hope this answers your question !!
Tamara FahiraI think Lana Turner (?)
C.G. WorleyI found myself asking the same freaking question.
