Can I get into MIT with B's?
While MIT states that it does not have a minimum GPA threshold, it does state that most competitive applicants have unweighted GPAs of at least 3.5 with As important in math and science courses.
Yep, as others have said, your GPA (and standardized test scores) is just one thing MIT is going to consider. 2 Bs and 1 C definitely won't rule you out of MIT yet, but you are really going to need to crack down and focus these next two years.
MIT doesn't have a required GPA that students must meet to apply and the institution doesn't share much information when it comes to the average GPA for accepted applicants. However, given MIT's unparalleled academic rigor, it makes sense to assume that most students have GPAs that hover around 4.0.
There is no minimum required GPA, but competitive applicants generally have a GPA of 3.5 or above, and mostly A's in mathematics and science courses. Testing must be completed by the October test date for spring (February) entry and by the March test date for fall (September) entry.
Simple question, simple answer: yes. I see students get admitted to ivy league schools with B's on their transcripts all the time. Also note: I see students with all A's on their transcript get denied by all the ivy league schools as well. GPA is a hefty measure that is used in admissions, but it is NOT the only one.
It's definitely possible to get in even with a few Bs, but it's certainly harder. Having amazing extracurriculars (ideally including a spike - that's a specific area in which you've achieved fantastic thing), and having a 4.0 from now on will definitely help.
Will one B ruin a 4.0 GPA high school? One B will not hurt your chances, especially because it was in a rigorous AP class. Your B will hardly make a dent in your GPA, and assuming that will be your only B by graduation, your GPA will be in the high 90th percentile even at the most competitive schools.

Aim high. Even though there are no official MIT GPA requirements, you should aim for a 4.17 weighted GPA. If you're already a junior or senior figuring out how to get into MIT and your GPA is lower than 4.17, know that scores close to the average MIT SAT scores or ACT scores can counterbalance a lower GPA.
There's no minimum required GPA; however, competitive applicants typically have a 3.5 GPA or above, and mostly As in math and science courses. Ideal preparation includes—at the very least—one year each of college-level calculus and calculus-based physics.
Can I get into MIT with a 4.9 GPA?
Final Admissions Verdict
To be safe, you should aim for the 75th percentile, with a 1570 SAT and a 4.17 GPA or higher to be above average. This is only part of the challenge - after this, you'll need to impress them beyond your academic scores, with your accomplishments and extracurriculars.
The average GPA required for MIT is 4.17 or higher. However, if your GPA is lower than 4.17, you can try to compensate for it with a higher SAT/ACT score.
Average GPA: 4.2
The average GPA at MIT is 4.2. This makes MIT Extremely Competitive for GPAs. (Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA. This school did not officially report its average GPA, but we've estimated it here using data from over 1,000 schools.)
Additionally, do not worry about that B affecting your college GPA. If you do well on the AP test and the college you decide to go to accepts AP credit, then you will just get automatic credit for that class instead of a letter grade, so it will not factor into your college GPA. Hope that helps!
None of the Ivy League schools have a minimum GPA requirement for applications, which means anyone can apply with any GPA. For Ivy League schools, however, a competitive GPA and application are best. Admission rates at Ivy League schools may be low, but it's possible with a well-rounded application.
For example, at Yale a whopping 96% of students graduated in the top 10% of their high school class. If you have a few B's and are still at the top of your class, you remain in a strong position!
A | = | 4.00 (Excellent) |
---|---|---|
B+ | = | 3.30 (Good) |
B B- | 3.00 2.70 (Satisfactory) | |
C+ | 2.30 | |
C | 2.00 (Poor) |
For example, 83-86 is the range for a B, but 87-89 is the smaller range for a B+. Both systems have the added problem that an A+ has no separate grade; thus a 15-point or four-point A stands for the huge range 93-100. Clearly, some CUE members have not considered the intracacies of the grading process.
Yes, getting into Harvard is possible even if you have a couple of B's on your transcript. Like other Ivy League schools, Harvard uses a holistic admissions process, considering your overall academic performance, extracurricular activities, leadership roles, personal essays, and recommendation letters.
Good luck with your decision about what to do. There's never a magic formula for how many Bs are okay. It also really depends on the school and other parts of your application. If I were to make a guess, however, your unweighted GPA should at least be a 3.75 cumulative for you to be competitive(again this all depends).
Is it bad to have 2 Bs?
Your freshman grades count very luttle in terms of college admissions. No 2 B's won't ruin your life.
As a freshman, your GPA has the potential to change quite a bit before you apply to college, but 3.5 is a very good starting point. You're earning strong grades across all of your classes already, and you can use the next couple years to do even better and impress colleges with your academic growth.
An MIT undergraduate must achieve all of the following academic standards to qualify and maintain federal student financial assistance: Have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a C (3.0 on MIT's 5.0 scale) Pass 67% of cumulative units attempted (defined as “pace”)
It also really depends on the school and other parts of your application. If I were to make a guess, however, your unweighted GPA should at least be a 3.75 cumulative for you to be competitive(again this all depends). If you are taking a lot of AP/IB classes, a couple of Bs shouldn't be too harmful to your application.
Generally, graduate programs at MIT require a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. However, some programs may have higher GPA requirements. It is important to note that GPA is not the only factor considered in graduate admissions decisions.
