Do ETFs always make money?
Like most investments, there's no guarantee that you'll make money with an ETF. Investing in ETFs involves paying fees, which may be less than some investments but higher than others. You will have to pay taxes on capital gains and distributions.
Lower returns than individual stocks
Because ETFs have lower risk than individual stocks, they also have lower potential returns. However, among the various categories of ETFs, some are higher risk than others (e.g., Bitcoin ETFs vs. bond ETFs), meaning they have the potential to produce greater returns.
Bond ETFs are used to provide regular income to investors. Their income distribution depends on the performance of underlying bonds. They might include government, corporate, and state and local bonds, usually called municipal bonds (or munis). Unlike their underlying instruments, bond ETFs do not have a maturity date.
Lack of liquidity
An investor may have difficulties selling when the ETF is thinly traded, which means it trades at low volume and often high volatility. This can be seen in the difference between what an investor will pay for an ETF (the bid) and the price it can be sold for (the ask).
Bottom line. ETFs make a great pick for many investors who are starting out as well as for those who simply don't want to do all the legwork required to own individual stocks. Though it's possible to find the big winners among individual stocks, you have strong odds of doing well consistently with ETFs.
ETFs are subject to market fluctuation and the risks of their underlying investments. ETFs are subject to management fees and other expenses.
Like selling an individual stock, you can sell an ETF with a market order or a limit order. 4 Market orders will execute more quickly, but if the ETF is volatile, you might earn less from the sale than you anticipated. Limit orders ensure a minimum price, but the trade-off is that your order isn't processed as quickly.
Holding an ETF for longer than a year may get you a more favorable capital gains tax rate when you sell your investment.
Some ETFs might provide passive income given enough capital invested, but this depends on market conditions. Dividend ETFs can be a good passive income generator, but again, it depends on market conditions and how much you have invested and hold.
You expose your portfolio to much higher risk with sector ETFs, so you should use them sparingly, but investing 5% to 10% of your total portfolio assets may be appropriate. If you want to be highly conservative, don't use these at all.
Can a ETF go to zero?
Leveraged ETF prices tend to decay over time, and triple leverage will tend to decay at a faster rate than 2x leverage. As a result, they can tend toward zero.
Hypothetically: Yes. Practically: No. ETFs are stocks which derive their values from the underlying stocks of net assets of an investment. These investments are not guaranteed and as such could ALL go to $0 in which your NAV would be $0.

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) can be an excellent entry point into the stock market for new investors. They're cheap and typically carry lower risk than individual stocks since a single fund holds a diversified collection of investments.
S&P 500 ETF | 1-yr | 3-yr |
---|---|---|
Returns after taxes on distributions | 25.85% | 9.56% |
Returns after taxes on distributions and sale of fund shares | 15.87% | 7.70% |
Average Large Blend Fund | ||
Returns before taxes | 22.32% | 8.83% |
Stock-picking offers an advantage over exchange-traded funds (ETFs) when there is a wide dispersion of returns from the mean. Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) offer advantages over stocks when the return from stocks in the sector has a narrow dispersion around the mean.
Like any business, even low-cost ETFs need to generate revenue to cover their costs. Like any business, even low-cost ETFs need to generate revenue to cover their costs. Plenty of ETFs fail to garner the assets necessary to cover these costs and, consequently, ETF closures happen regularly.
The securities that underlie the funds are held by a custodian, not by Vanguard. Vanguard is paid by the funds to provide administration and other services. If Vanguard ever did go bankrupt, the funds would not be affected and would simply hire another firm to provide these services.
Typically, the issuer will give a minimum of 30 days' notice to allow investors to find an alternative ETF, or to alter their investment strategy. If you own ETF shares, you will receive cash equivalent to the value of your holding on the day of liquidation (not the value on the last day of trading).
Strategy and Risk Tolerance
Unlike ETFs, mutual funds can offer more specific strategies as well as blends of strategies. Mutual funds offer the same type of indexed investing options as ETFs but also an array of actively and passively managed options that can be fine-tuned to cater to an investor's needs.
So when is the ideal time? "Middle of the day is generally best, and if there are international (European) securities in the ETF, trading in the morning will ensure you get prices closest to fair value," Nadig explains.
Which ETF has the highest return?
Symbol | Name | 5-Year Return |
---|---|---|
IYW | iShares U.S. Technology ETF | 24.71% |
XSD | SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF | 24.26% |
FTEC | Fidelity MSCI Information Technology Index ETF | 23.66% |
VGT | Vanguard Information Technology ETF | 23.50% |
ETFs, in that sense, are often viewed as a more flexible investment strategy, allowing the trader to sell at any time during usual trading hours, and use live trading tools like market orders or limit orders to carry out trades.
According to our calculations, a $1000 investment made in February 2014 would be worth $5,971.20, or a gain of 497.12%, as of February 5, 2024, and this return excludes dividends but includes price increases. Compare this to the S&P 500's rally of 178.17% and gold's return of 55.50% over the same time frame.
Assuming an average annual return rate of about 10% (a typical historical average), a $10,000 investment in the S&P 500 could potentially grow to approximately $25,937 over 10 years.
If you buy substantially identical security within 30 days before or after a sale at a loss, you are subject to the wash sale rule. This prevents you from claiming the loss at this time.
