Will vinegar cause stainless steel to rust?
The plastic and glass surfaces on most small kitchen appliances, such as blenders, coffee makers, and toasters, are safe to clean with vinegar, but you want to avoid any rubber parts or metal that vinegar can corrode. This includes stainless steel.
Although vinegar's acidic nature can corrode stainless steel, it works well when you dilute it with water. Apply distilled white vinegar with a soft cloth for best results.
However, please don't leave it on any surface for too long, as vinegar can erode it, weakening the metal and making it more susceptible to rusting.
The rusting process—that is, the reaction of iron with oxygen to form iron oxides—is catalyzed by acidic conditions, and vinegar is an acid. Thus while vinegar does not “cause” rusting, it makes it go faster. Acetic acid—the acid in vinegar—complexes the ionic iron that makes up rust, helping to loosen it for removal.
For more stubborn stains or heavy-duty messes, sprinkle some baking soda on the area, let it sit for a few minutes, and then scrub away with a cloth dampened with vinegar. Plain water, white vinegar, and a little baking soda are some of the best, most inexpensive ways to clean any stainless steel you may have.
Vinegar is safe to use on stainless steel and helps remove oil and grime. Fill a reusable spray bottle with a combination of 1:1 white vinegar and water. Spritz it on, and wipe it off — no need to rinse!
Let vinegar sit for 10 seconds or longer for tough stains before wiping it off. Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe off excess the vinegar. Make sure to wipe with the grain of the stainless steel to prevent streaking. You can use paper towels, microfiber cloths, and even an old piece of clothing to wipe off vinegar.
To tackle items with significant corrosion, submerge your rusty tools or knives in a bowl of white vinegar and let them sit overnight or as long as 24 hours. Once they have had a good soak, remove them from the vinegar and scrub the rust off with steel wool, a scouring pad, or a wire brush.
Vinegar is a dilute solution of acetic acid, a weak acid, in water. It will dissolve zinc fast, but other common metals like iron, copper and aluminium, very slowly. Stainless steel is impervious, likewise the so-called 'noble metals ' – ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, platinum, and gold.
The vinegar-and-salt mixture needs time to break down the rust. This can take anywhere from one to three days. Check the tool periodically to see if the rust has softened. Once the rust has softened, use a metal brush or steel wool to scrub off the surface.
Is distilled vinegar the same as white vinegar?
White vinegar, also known as distilled vinegar or spirit vinegar, is made by fermenting grain alcohol (ethanol) which then turns into acetic acid. Water is then added to the vinegar, so white vinegar is made of five to ten percent acetic acid and ninety to ninety-five percent water.
Most people know WD-40 Multi-Use Product as a lubricant, but it was originally used as an anti-corrosive by the aerospace industry to prevent spacecraft from rusting. WD-40 can help remove rust from metals like iron, chrome, and stainless steel without further damaging the surface of the metal or removing the paint.
Stainless steel is a chromium – based steel that doesn't react well to abrasives. Fortunately, you can remove rust from stainless steel without a lot of scrubbing. Simply spray the affected area with some WD-40 Multi-Use Product, leave for a couple of minutes, and remove with a gentle cleaning brush or toothbrush.
To make: Start with a clean spray bottle. Pour in white vinegar, Blue Dawn liquid dishwashing detergent and water. Apply the spray top and shake to mix. To use: Shake to mix then spray it liberally on the stainless steel surface you want to clean.
Use a microfiber or soft cloth when wiping down your appliances. Avoid cleaners that can damage steel and finishes. Instead, clean your stainless steel appliances with a dish soap like Dawn® Platinum. Its unique formula is tough enough to break up grease and grime while staying gentle on stainless steel surfaces.
You can use Windex® Ammonia-Free Glass Cleaner on your car's tinted windows, mirrors, glass, chrome, stainless steel, plastic, and vinyl surfaces. For a streak-free shine, clean car windows when the surface is cool and out of direct sunlight whenever possible.
Baking soda and vinegar are two pantry staples that can be used to clean stainless steel. You can use baking soda by making a paste with water to gently rub on the surface of your appliance. Vinegar can be used as a stainless steel cleaner when mixed with mineral oil.

Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water and 1/2 cup cleaning vinegar. Use a sponge or microfiber mop, wringing well to prevent over-wetting the floor. Rinse the mop head often. There's no need to rinse the floor; the solution will not leave residue or streaks.
For faucets, they say to dip paper towels in white vinegar and wrap the towels, paper mache-style, around the faucet to soak. So will vinegar damage chrome? The idea is sound, but the duration is not. Even soaking your shower head or faucets for more than 15 minutes puts their finish at risk.
What happens if you soak metal in vinegar?
Warning. Metal objects may appear black after soaking in vinegar or lemon juice, but they should return to their original color after rinsing in water.
- White vinegar is the chemical which causes most of the rusting effect.
- Lemon juice will provide you with quite a surprising effect and appearance.
- Muriatic acid and peroxide is quite a popular way to quickly rust metal.
“Never mix vinegar with other cleaning products like bleach or ammonia or those 'blue' window cleaning products [like Windex], because they can create dangerous chlorine gas,” Gayman says.
Vinegar contains acetic acid. So, the acetic acid in vinegar can serve as the electrolyte needed in the electrochemical metal oxidation. Generally, lower pH results in faster corrosion or oxidation.
It is because vinegar is an acid and it reacts with metal like all other acids do. Vinegar is just not as aggressive an acid as others. It is a food item and hence not marketed as an acid. The reaction produces different compounds which may be of different color.
