Can you lose all your money if a bank fails?
If your bank fails, up to $250,000 of deposited money (per person, per account ownership type) is protected by the FDIC. When banks fail, the most common outcome is that another bank takes over the assets and your accounts are simply transferred over. If not, the FDIC will pay you out.
For the most part, if you keep your money at an institution that's FDIC-insured, your money is safe â at least up to $250,000 in accounts at the failing institution. You're guaranteed that $250,000, and if the bank is acquired, even amounts over the limit may be smoothly transferred to the new bank.
The bottom line
First, you still owe the money. Your debt doesn't magically go away just because your bank does. Second, the new owner of the loan -- either the FDIC or the acquiring bank -- must honor the original terms of the loan.
Deposits are insured up to at least $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. Deposit insurance is calculated dollar-for-dollar, principal plus any interest accrued or due to the depositor, through the date of default.
Absent unique circ*mstances like arson and fraud, it's highly unusual to lose money held at a bank. Less than 7% of bank failures since the start of 2007 resulted in losses for uninsured depositors, federal data show.
In short, if you have less than $250,000 in your account at an FDIC-insured US bank, then you almost certainly have nothing to worry about. Each deposit account owner will be insured up to $250,000 - so, for example, if you have a joint account with your spouse, your money will be insured up to $500,000.

By law, after insured depositors are paid, uninsured depositors are paid next, followed by general creditors and then stockholders. In most cases, general creditors and stockholders realize little or no recovery.
Over a few weeks in the spring of 2023, multiple high-profile regional banks suddenly collapsed: Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), Signature Bank, and First Republic Bank. These banks weren't limited to one geographic area, and there wasn't one single reason behind their failures.
Still, the FDIC itself doesn't have unlimited money. If enough banks flounder at once, it could deplete the fund that backstops deposits. However, experts say even in that event, bank patrons shouldn't worry about losing their FDIC-insured money.
Can the government take money from your bank account in a crisis?
They are able to levy up to the total amount you owe in back taxes, and the bank must comply. For many individuals, this might mean seizing everything in their entire bank account. The only way you are able to release a levy due to hardship is if you make a satisfactory resolution.
However, because credit unions serve mostly individuals and small businesses (rather than large investors) and are known to take fewer risks, credit unions are generally viewed as safer than banks in the event of a collapse. Regardless, both types of financial institutions are equally protected.
Those with deposits at big banks like JPMorgan Chase, which holds roughly 10% of the nation's bank deposits, are likely safe, given that the banks are considered âtoo big to fail.â âKeep your money in an FDIC-insured bank if you have $250,000 or less.
Should I pull my money out of my bank? It doesn't make sense to take all your money out of a bank, said Jay Hatfield, CEO at Infrastructure Capital Advisors and portfolio manager of the InfraCap Equity Income ETF. But make sure your bank is insured by the FDIC, which most large banks are.
Ally Bank told USA TODAY that "nearly 90% of our customer deposits are fully insured (by the FDIC)." PNC Bank said its "strong capital and liquidity levels position us well to continue supporting our customers regardless of the economic environment."
Since 1933, no depositor has ever lost a penny of FDIC-insured funds.
Your money is safe at Capital One
Capital One, N.A., is a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), an independent federal agency. The FDIC insures balances up to $250,000 held in various types of consumer and business deposit accounts.
Customers in bank runs typically withdraw money based on fears that the institution will become insolvent. With more people withdrawing money, banks will use up their cash reserves and can end up in default.
Among the safest US banks, according to Global Finance's November 2022 rankings, are AgriBank, US Bank, CoBank, AgFirst Bank, and Farm Credit Bank of Texas, primarily for those in the agricultural sector.
Experts told us that credit unions do fail, like banks (which are also generally safe), but rarely. And deposits up to $250,000 at federally insured credit unions are guaranteed, just as they are at banks.
Are credit unions safe from bank collapse?
Yes. Generally speaking, credit unions are safer than banks in a collapse. This is because credit unions use fewer risks, serving individuals and small businesses rather than large investors, like a bank.
A bank account freeze means you can't take or transfer money out of the account. Bank accounts are typically frozen for suspected illegal activity, a creditor seeking payment, or by government request. A frozen account may also be a sign that you've been a victim of identity theft.
