Does closing a savings account hurt your credit?
Closing a bank account typically won't hurt your credit. Your credit score is based on how you manage borrowed money, and your checking or savings accounts aren't debts. So bank account closures aren't reported to the three major credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.
Generally, closing a bank account doesn't affect your credit
But your credit could suffer if you're not careful when you close an account.
Closing a bank account that's in good standing won't hurt your credit score. If you have a negative bank balance, however, it's important to resolve the balance before closing the account. Otherwise, your credit could suffer as a result.
An early account closure fee is a predetermined amount of money — usually between $5 and $50 — that the bank will charge you for closing your account soon after opening it. Of the banks that charge this fee, many will impose it upon customers who close their accounts within 90 days of opening.
Opening a savings account does not impact your credit score because you aren't borrowing money and the activity in your savings account isn't reported to a credit agency. Most financial institutions will run a soft credit inquiry when you open a savings account but it is only to check your identity.
If fees are periodically deducted, the account is technically active. “As you let your unused account remain open, you could come to realize that your bank is slowly eating away at whatever money is left,” said McDaniels. “Do not let this happen to you. Close your accounts on your own terms and keep your money.”
Banks have different timelines (usually 90 to 180 days) for how long you have to keep your account open before closing it without a fee, which can be up to $25. Check what your bank's rules are before you move forward with canceling your account.
There's no set number of bank accounts you should have. The number of bank accounts that are right for you depends on your personal financial situation and goals. You may have too many bank accounts if you cannot manage them all or you're no longer contributing to them all.
Before closing your savings account, be sure to update your contact information, cancel automated transactions, download your bank statements, and destroy checkbooks or debit cards.
Closing a credit card could change your debt to credit utilization ratio, which may impact credit scores. Closing a credit card account you've had for a long time may impact the length of your credit history.
Is it smart to have a savings account?
Opening a savings account is often an essential step in achieving financial stability and reaching your long-term savings goals. It offers a secure way to store your money while potentially growing your wealth over time.
In general, you cannot use a bank account to build credit. That's because savings and checking account activity is not usually reported to credit bureaus, so it does not affect your credit scores.
A savings account is a safe place to put your money when you can't afford to lose any or think you'll need it in an emergency. It's also a good place to put some of your investments as a hedge against losses – you can't lose everything if some of your money is in an ordinary savings account, after all.
Canceling a credit card — even one with zero balance — can end up hurting your credit score in multiple ways. A temporary dip in score can also lessen your chances of getting approved for new credit.
Is $20,000 a Good Amount of Savings? Having $20,000 in a savings account is a good starting point if you want to create a sizable emergency fund. When the occasional rainy day comes along, you'll be financially prepared for it. Of course, $20,000 may only go so far if you find yourself in an extreme situation.
Those will become part of your budget. The 50-30-20 rule recommends putting 50% of your money toward needs, 30% toward wants, and 20% toward savings. The savings category also includes money you will need to realize your future goals. Let's take a closer look at each category.
There's nothing wrong with keeping $10,000 in a savings account. But it might not earn you the highest yields. CDs and brokerage accounts could be better homes for your cash in some situations.
Aim for building the fund to three months of expenses, then splitting your savings between a savings account and investments until you have six to eight months' worth tucked away. After that, your savings should go into retirement and other goals—investing in something that earns more than a bank account.
Call your old bank or send a secure message through your online banking portal to confirm there are no pending transactions or outstanding charges and the account balance is zero. Then you can ask the bank to close the account. Some banks require written notice that you want to close your account.
If the bank closed your account and there is money still in it, you're due a refund. The bank will typically send you a check, but if it suspects criminal activity on your part, it may be allowed to freeze your assets.
Is it bad to have a credit card and not use it?
The other risk of leaving a card inactive is the issuer might decide to close the account. If you haven't used a card for a long period, it generally will not hurt your credit score. However, if a lender notices your inactivity and decides to close the account, it can cause your score to slip.
Gaines reiterates that even most high-yield savings accounts lose value to inflation over time. “More than two months' worth of living expenses in a savings account is too much given the ability to earn around 5% from easily accessible money market accounts that should not fluctuate in price.”
By age 50, most financial advisers recommend having five to six times your annual salary saved. While wages fluctuate quarter to quarter, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the average annual salary is about $61,900.
Your payment history is one of the most important credit scoring factors and can have the biggest impact on your scores. Having a long history of on-time payments is best for your credit scores, while missing a payment could hurt them. The effects of missing payments can also increase the longer a bill goes unpaid.
Having multiple checking accounts could also mean more maintenance — and more fees — from the bank if you fall below the minimum balance requirements or inactivity thresholds. Be sure to stay on top of your finances to avoid paying any unnecessary fees or losing out on accruing interest.
