How can I get my entire student loan forgiven?
If you work full time for a government or nonprofit organization, you may qualify for forgiveness of the entire remaining balance of your Direct Loans after you've made 120 qualifying payments—i.e., 10 years of payments. To benefit from
Student loan cancellation programs
Perkins loan cancellation. Borrowers with federal Perkins loans can have up to 100% of their loans canceled if they work in a public service job for five years. In many cases, approved borrowers will see a percentage of their loans discharged incrementally for each year worked.
If you have a full-time job with a U.S. federal, state, local, or tribal government or with a nonprofit organization, you may qualify for student loan forgiveness. You'll need to make 120 payments, which don't have to be consecutive, under a qualifying repayment plan to be eligible.
If you have loans that have been in repayment for more than 20 or 25 years, those loans may immediately qualify for forgiveness. Borrowers who have reached 20 or 25 years (240 or 300 months) worth of payments for IDR forgiveness may see their loans forgiven in Spring 2023.
To be eligible, your annual income must have fallen below $125,000 (for individuals) or $250,000 (for married couples or heads of households). If you received a Pell Grant in college and meet the income threshold, you will be eligible for up to $20,000 in debt relief.
The White House announced that single borrowers earning less than $125,000 per year, or households earning less than $250,000, are eligible for $10,000 in loan forgiveness. Borrowers who fall under the income caps and received Pell Grants in college will receive an extra $10,000 – totaling $20,000 in forgiveness.
At what age do student loans get written off? There is no specific age when students get their loans written off in the United States, but federal undergraduate loans are forgiven after 20 years, and federal graduate school loans are forgiven after 25 years.
Income-driven repayment plan
With each plan, you'll make monthly payments based on your discretionary income and family size. After 20 or 25 years, depending on the plan, the remaining balance on your loans is forgiven.
Is there a deadline to apply? Borrowers have until Dec. 31, 2023, to apply for the forgiveness program.
If you have federal student loans and are making payments under an income-driven repayment (IDR) plan, you may be able to have your loans forgiven after 20 years. That can give you hope and a tangible goal to work toward as you continue to make your payments.
How does Biden's student loan forgiveness work?
With each additional $1,000 of debt, the window for forgiveness increases by a year. For example, a student who took out $13,000 in loans will now have their debt wiped out if they've been paying it back for 11 years, or in 12 years for those who borrowed $14,000 — and so on.
Your student loan was forgiven or canceled.
Your loan could have been part of this forgiven debt or a similar lawsuit. Contact your servicer if you have a zero account balance and think this may have happened to you.
What student loans are not eligible for forgiveness? Private student loans, by definition, are private and are not eligible to be forgiven. These are loans the borrower owes to student loan providers and not the federal government.
Most of the qualified borrowers will be on Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR) plans. There's no action required for borrowers — the best way to find out if you qualify is to wait for the government to email you.
If you have worked in public service (federal, state, local, tribal government or a non-profit organization) for 10 years or more (even if not consecutively), you may be eligible to have all your student debt canceled.
Additionally, all PSLF borrowers with an approved PSLF form will begin to see the payment count adjustment applied to their PSLF counts in Fall 2023. If you consolidate at any time after January 2023 and before April 30, 2024, you will receive credit for the same periods of PSLF for which you currently have credit.
In a pair of recent cases, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on the Biden administration's student loan forgiveness program. In Biden v. Nebraska, which was decided 6-3, the court struck down the administration's student loan forgiveness program and agreed with the six challenging states that they had standing to sue.
Borrowers with Federal Family Education Loan Program debt owned by the government will see $10,000 in cancellation. If your FFELP loan is commercially owned by a private company, you will not qualify unless you applied to consolidate your debt into a direct loan by Sept. 29, 2022.
If you default on your student loan, that status will be reported to national credit reporting agencies. This reporting may damage your credit rating and future borrowing ability. Also, the government can collect on your loans by taking funds from your wages, tax refunds, and other government payments.
If the loan is paid in full, the default will remain on your credit report for seven years following the final payment date, but your report will reflect a zero balance. If you rehabilitate your loan, the default will be removed from your credit report.
What happens after 7 years of not paying student loans?
Defaulted federal student loans either fall off seven years after the date of default, or seven years after the date the loan was transferred from the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFEL) to the Department of Education.
In most cases, the borrower no longer had any outstanding student loan reported on their credit record in February 2023, suggesting the loan may have been paid off, discharged, or aged off the borrower's credit record.
Education | Percent behind on payments |
---|---|
Some college or technical degree | 28% |
Associate's degree | 19% |
Bachelor's degree | 7% |
Graduate degree | 6% |
